In these times of climatic change and strained supply chains, securing the sustainable food supply for the world population - while maintaining the economical, ecological and social balance - presents a fundamental challenge on a global, national and regional scale.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and its Center for Biogenic Value Creation and Smart Farming are using the combined expertise of five Fraunhofer institutes to plan the entire food value chain in order to reorganize it in terms of sustainability as well as to aid businesses in the food industry with their transformation process. The center is organized into two smaller initiatives across several offices in Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The research and development of innovative technologies for the sustainable production and processing of agricultural products, i.e., the increase of biogenic value creation, takes center stage here.
The Fraunhofer EMFT contributes to the center with its competences in the areas of sensor solutions, system integration and micro actuators, aiming at development of innovative technologies and systems for measuring various environmental parameters e.g. in the areas of plant cultivation and livestock farming. The extensive Fraunhofer EMFT competences in secure electronics come into use for ensuring the safe and robust functionality of the systems in harsh environmental conditions. For the analysis and processing the sensor data, the Fraunhofer EMFT scientists deploy their special skills in machine learning for sensor systems.
