Share of Research Projects by Competence
The Fraunhofer EMFT team was able to make its contribution to tackling the current challenges facing society in 2024 with a total of 95 projects. 33% of these can be assigned to the research area Micro- and Nanotechnologies. This in turn forms the basis for Fraunhofer EMFT’s research areas Sensor Solutions, Circuit Design, Micropumps, and Safe and Secure Electronics. It is precisely the interdisciplinary interaction between these areas that helps us produce forward-looking solutions for people and the environment.

The operating budget of Fraunhofer EMFT in 2024 was around 23.7 million euros. Industrial orders generated a total volume of around 4.3 million euros, or 18.1 % of the operating budget.

In order to achieve this, you need a strong team: compared to the previous year, the number of permanent staff at the institute increased by 15 in 2024, with a total of workforce of 190 as of the end of the year. Of these, 121 people are employed in the scientific area and 67 in support areas, including marketing, IT, administration, technology, quality management, organization and services. In addition, the Fraunhofer EMFT team has been supplemented with two trainees.
Another 59 student assistants from a wide range of universities and other higher education institutions were employed at Fraunhofer EMFT over the course of the year. They were involved in Fraunhofer EMFT research activities and/or worked on their final thesis.

Together we drive forward research and development of sensor systems and actuators to the benefit of human beings and the environment. Our multicultural background is a key advantage, enabling us to look at scientific issues from a diverse range of perspectives. We make the most of this opportunity to inspire each other in terms of our mindset and our problem-solving strategies.

History of Fraunhofer EMFT
Thermal processing during the eighties
- Fraunhofer EMFT originates from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solid State Technology IFT, which was founded in 1974. Here, technologies were developed for the manufacture of semiconductors. Other areas of activity included sensor technology, communication technology and microstructure technology.
- 1999 the Fraunhofer IFT was dissolved and split into three independent sections. The section located in Hansastrasse, Munich - today`s Fraunhofer EMFT - became part of the Berlin-based Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM.
- Since July 1, 2010, Fraunhofer EMFT has been operating as an independent institution of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft afresh.
- On March 1, 2023, Fraunhofer EMFT is transformed into the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Microsystems and Solid State Technologies EMFT
