Reliable Drug Dosing Systems

Drug dosing systems based on micromembrane pumps have a wide range of applications in the field of medical technology.  Implantable applications, such as intrathecal pain therapy, require very long service lives as well as minimal installation space and energy requirements. In contrast, disposable products are usually used for applications on the body, for example for diabetes therapy, pain therapy or hormone therapy; this requires low manufacturing costs at high volumes.

Fraunhofer EMFT micropumps are the beating heart of drug dosing systems. But other features and components are also realized to meet the reliability and safety requirements, which is essential for dosing systems in medical technology, e.g.

  • High back pressure capability with fluids to clear clogged catheters
  • Safety Valve: self-locking "free flow protection" to eliminate incorrect dosing when overpressure is generated in the drug reservoir
  • Methods for dosing monitoring, and to detect malfunctions
  • Integrated bubble detection and bubble separator

Furthermore, users are supported in organizing the manufacturing chain with suitable companies. For example, strategic collaborations exist for metal micropumps (Rapa Healthcare GmbH, Germany) and silicon micropumps (Philips, Netherlands) for manufacturing the micropumps to suit specific applications.
