Kicking off Fraunhofer center for biogenic value creation and smart farming
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is planning a new center for biogenic value creation and smart farming in different locations in Bavaria and Mecklenburg- Vorpommern. The center is going to conduct research and development on innovative technologies for sustainable agriculture along the whole value chain from seed to product, on land and in water, involving several Fraunhofer research institutes.
Resilience against crisis events is of essential importance for securing the future of farming as a long-term guarantee for regional food production. This is where the new center for biogenic value creation and smart farming comes in, with new solutions to add value and guarantee the regional security of supply. The goal of the initiative is to develop sustainable, resource-efficient high technologies and transfer the research results directly into application, thereby assisting farmers in their transformation process for more sustainability and counteracting the climate change. The center shallact as a hotbed for reginal innovation ecosystems consisting of established businesses, innovative startups and specialized research institutions, thus facilitating creation of regional value networks. The resulting regional high-quality job opportunities and trainee positions in agriculture and food production will increase the German achievement potential. In order to stem this, the Fraunhofer research institutions IVV, EMFT, IIS, IGD and IGP are going to join forces and contribute with their expertise for generating value by technological innovations in their respective locations in Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Fraunhofer EMFT in Munich is contributing to the initiative with its sensor competences
Fraunhofer EMFT has a wide experience in development of sensor systems and technologies for various use cases in diverse application areas. For example, the researchers are working on highly specific and robust in-field sensor devices for identification of plant diseases, in order to detect and differentiate plant viruses in an early stage of the infection. Fraunhofer EMFT also disposes of long-term experience in development of sensor materials and systems for monitoring food freshness, in order to increase product safety and diminish food waste at the end of the value chain.
